Description
Planning for the new Ju87 D series
began in the early 1940s.
The oil cooler is attached to the underside of the nose, and
the radiators are installed on both sides of the underside of the main wing, resulting
in a cleaner nose cowling shape compared to the B series, and the
streamlined windshield and main landing gear covers are also more sophisticated. The shape has been improved,
resulting in an aircraft with excellent aerodynamics.
Additionally, the onboard fuel capacity has been increased and bulletproof steel plates have been added around the crew.
Although the D type was introduced to various fronts,
it was clearly inferior to Allied fighters at a maximum speed of 400km/h. However, there was still room for action
on the Eastern Front, where there were few Allied high-performance fighters .
As a countermeasure for the wing load that had increased to near the limit due to repeated modifications, the D-5
had its main wing tips extended and was equipped with detachable main landing gear, and
later versions had dive brakes removed.
The G-2 was based on the D5, with 37mm cannons mounted on the underside of both wings, and the
20mm cannons on the wings removed.
The area of operation was mainly on the Eastern Front, where it
demonstrated its effectiveness against Soviet anti-tank attacks.
