The Vought Corsair was one of the most unusual but also most successful Navy aircraft of WW2. Feared by the Japanese enemy, who nicknamed it the Whispering Death, it fought its way through the Pacific skies from 1943 to 1945, achieving record-breaking successes: 2140 enemy aircraft destroyed with 189 friendly losses. The Corsair's concentrated firepower consisted of six 12.7mm Browning MGs. Its distinctive folded wings made it highly recognizable to ground troops who called it the Sweetheart of Okinawa. The F4U-1A formed the first batch with major modifications, top speed 671km/h.
