American Model Builders 725 The Pickle Works G.R. Dill & Sons Salting Station - LASERkit(R) -- Kit - 16 x 3-3/4 x 3" 40.6 x 9.5 x 7.6cm, HO Scale

Description

Trackside salting stations operated across the US from the late 1800s through the 1960s, purchasing cucumbers from local farmers and preserving them in brine-filled wooden vats until they could be shipped by rail to pickling plants. Most had tall platforms constructed around the vats to facilitate loading. Some had roofs, but quite often, the vats were exposed to the elements. Many had a simple shed that served as office and storeroom for salt and spices. When ready to ship, pickles were netted out of the vats, loaded in wheelbarrows, pushed up wood planks to the tops of waiting pickle cars and dumped in. The brine would then be hand pumped out of the vats into casks, which in turn would be dumped into tank cars. Eventually conveyors and electric pumps were employed to load the pickles and brine.

A great trackside industry to add to your layout, this laser-cut wood kit captures the appearance of a typical salting station. Parts are provided for 20 brine vats, which display individual wood planks and banding. Made from quality birch plywood and basswood, all parts can easily be stained to capture the weathered look of prototype facilities. An open platform with vats and freight car loading point, elevated shed with covered deck, and the annex platform with roof are all included. This modular approach makes the finished model easy to install almost anywhere on a layout. Additional details include laser-cut ladders and wheelbarrows, cast resin casks and cucumber loads for the wheelbarrows, a white metal scale, optional open vats with simulated brine, well-illustrated instructions, and full color signs, includes a unique G. R. Dill & Sons pickle-shaped rooftop billboard.

The complete Salting Station measures 16 (40.6cm) long x 3-3/4 (9.5cm) wide by 3 (7.6cm) high; covered annex measures 6-3/4 (17.1cm) long, elevated shed 2-3/4 (6.9cm) long and the open platform 6-1/2" (16.5cm) long.
