Description
B-17F Memphis Belle, 50 Anniversary - Academy 12495
Though not the most produced, the Boeing B-17 was WWII's most famous American heavy bomber. It got the name "Flying Fortress" from a journalist who noticed the ten bristling .50 cal machine guns on its first flight. The most famous B-17 was a B-17F-10-BO tail number 03888 with the 324th Bomber Squadron in the UK. This crew named her the "Memphis Belle" after the sweetheart of her pilot, Lt. Robert K. Morgan. This B-17 is regarded as the first USAAF bomber crew to complete 25 European missions and thus rotate home. The crew and the plane were brought home and became the stars of a War Bond Tour and Hollywood war propaganda film called "Memphis Belle". The city of Memphis later purchased and put it in an open-air memorial. This kit comprises over 150 transparent and plastic parts ready for a faithful recreation of the B-17F, with two finishing markings in 1/72 scale. The fully assembled model is 32cm long and 8.1cm tall.
