P-38F Lightning, Glacier Girl - Academy 12208
The P-38 Lightning was produced during the Second World War and served as the foremost long-range fighter for the Army Air Force until the emergence of the P-51D Mustang. The Lockheed P-38 was one of the most interesting World War II designs, featuring unique twin booms, with a piston engine in each, and a central nacelle for the cockpit and armament. From June 1941, this aircraft was used extensively in the Pacific Theater. This powerful fighter was used for interception, dive bombing, ground attack, night combat, radar and visual surveillance, bomber pathfinding, evacuation missions, and as a long-range escort fighter when equipped with underwing drop tanks. The P-38 F variant, which was produced in April 1942, could carry external 150-gallon fuel tanks, so it could participate in even longer missions. "Glacier Girl", the subject of this model, was forced to land in Greenland and was buried in a glacier. 50 years later she was recovered and currently performs in airshows across the country. The fully assembled 1/48 scale model is 24cm long and 33cm wide.
