Description
The Lockheed S-3A Viking is the world's first carrier-based jet anti-submarine patrol aircraft,
adopted by the US Navy as the successor to the Grumman S-2 Tracker .
The S-3A is equipped with the latest anti-submarine search equipment, including the APS-116 radar, infrared search equipment,
retractable magnetic search equipment, active sonar system and ECM equipment . In addition, the fuselage bomb bay can be equipped with four homing torpedoes and depth charges, and the underwing pylons can be equipped with attack weapons such as various bombs, rockets, and flares. Furthermore, the top of the cockpit is equipped with an extending aerial oil probe, and the main wings and vertical tail can be folded hydraulically.
Actual deployment began in 1975 and has been deployed to 12 squadrons.
Derivatives of the S-3A include the US-3A, which has been modified as a transport aircraft between aircraft carriers and bases, and the
improved S-3B, which has the ability to operate the AGM-84 Harpoon.
