Description

The battleship Nagato's launch ceremony was held on November 9, 1919, and was completed on
November 25, 1920 as the first ship of the 88 Fleet Plan.
Equipped with the world's largest 41cm main gun, she
had a maximum speed of 26.7 knots (at the time of final trials), making her the strongest and fastest battleship in the world.

Serving as the flagship of the Combined Fleet for a long time,
she was used heavily in public relations activities to show off Japan's naval power, and
was called ``Nagato and Mutsu the pride of Japan,'' and
was said to be the most popular battleship in Japan from before and during the war. I am.

In order to be equipped with a 41cm main gun that boasts a long firing range of approximately 30,000 meters,
the main gun command post, observation post, battle bridge, etc. must be located at a high location,
resulting in a complex and uniquely shaped bridge.

The structure , which has a large pillar in the center and
is supported by six pillars, is called a turret, and
after Nagato was completed, it became the center of attention of the European and American naval forces.
It was the first battleship to have a commander's elevator installed on the bridge due to its high bridge.
Additionally, a large rangefinder with a base line length of 10 meters was installed for the first time in Japan on the top of the turret.

In April 1934, major modernization work began at the Kure Naval Arsenal.
In order to increase the firing range, the elevation angle of the main gun was raised from 30 degrees to 43 degrees, and
it was replaced with a 45-caliber Type 89 41cm twin gun.
For defense, emphasis is placed on underwater defense, and the ship is equipped with a huge bulge on the side.
At the same time as providing anti-torpedo protection, it also prevented an increase in draft due to increased weight.

All of the 21 boilers were heavy oil-fired cans, and
4 of them were large, so a
total of 10 boilers increased the horsepower by an additional 2,000 horsepower
to 82,000 horsepower, which meant that instead of two chimneys, there was only one. , and
the induction chimneys that had been familiar to the people for many years disappeared.
Due to the lengthening of the stern and reinforcement of the bulge, the weight increased by approximately 6,500 tons, but the
ship was still able to sail at a speed of 25 knots.

In this way, ``Nagato'' was reborn on January 31, 1936 , as a completely new modernized battleship with a trial displacement of 43,580 tons
, and she entered the war in almost this form.
