I model Cajon pass in the late 40's and early 50's. The early UP Challengers were frequent visitors so it's been great to have manufactures putting these out. I own two now, one put out by Athearn and this BLI model. Both are beautiful additions to the layout with various pros and cons. The BLI model runs well and pulls well although if you get too much of a load on it as she climbs the hill, the engine has a tendency to skew looking funny and occasionally derailing. Fortunately this is well above my normal length train and a helper on the back would relieve the pressure. The model is well detailed, looking very nice. I wish the vents in the cab could be opened like my Athearn model and some of my UP brass because I like to have them open for interest. But that is a minor thing and this locomotive is a fine addition to my roster.

While I'm not a huge UP fan, I have always loved the appearance of the early Challenger engines. When a fellow club member brought in his Paragon 4 UP Challenger, I could not resist getting one of my own. I purchased 3826 and weathered her up, and she has been a fantastic engine. She pulls the longest trains up sharp grades on our club layout without even breaking a sweat! The details on this engine are phenomenal. The only complaint I have, if I have to have one, is that I wish they would have fixed the rear driver engine to the boiler, as on the real engine. I realize it would not be able to negotiate as tight of a radius this way, but it would prevent the slight "crab walk" on straight sections.
