Planning for the new Ju87 D series
began in the early 1940s.
The oil cooler is installed on the underside of the nose and
the radiators are installed on both sides of the underside of the main wing, resulting
in a cleaner nose cowling shape compared to the B series, a streamlined windshield
, and a more sophisticated main landing gear cover. It became
an aircraft with excellent aerodynamics.
Additionally, the onboard fuel capacity has been increased and bulletproof steel plates have been added around the crew.
Although the D type was introduced to various fronts,
it was clearly inferior to Allied fighters at a maximum speed of 400 km/h. However, there was still room for action
on the Eastern Front, where there were few Allied high-performance fighters .
As a measure against the wing load, which had increased to near the limit due to repeated modifications, the D-5
had its main wing tips extended and was equipped with detachable main landing gear, and
later models had dive brakes removed.
The G-1 was an anti-tank attack aircraft developed for attacking Soviet tanks and
was equipped with two Flak 18 37mm cannons for anti-tank attacks under the main wings.
In 1942, a plan to use the Stuka to attack Soviet tanks took shape, and
in December
a prototype aircraft with an underwing machine gun based on the Ju87D-1 was manufactured and tested.
The results of this test were very satisfactory and confirmed that a single
shot from a 37mm cannon into the engine area of the rear of a tank could disable it. Immediately, the G-1 type was mass-produced based on the Ju87D-3.
The G-2 was based on the D-5, with
37mm cannons mounted on the underside of both wings like the G-1, and
the 20mm cannons on the wings were removed.
The G-1 and G-2 operated mainly on the Eastern Front, where they
demonstrated their effectiveness against Soviet anti-tank attacks.
