The first of this type were built by Brooks Locomotive Works in 1900 for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad.  More than a thousand 2-6-2's existed in the US, Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway being one of the largest consumers of this type. Unfortunately its nosing problems made this locomotive unsuited for passengers workings.
