Description
Commonly known as "shifters" on the PRR, the B6 class was the railroads most successful steam switcher locomotive. These locomotives were constructed between 1916 and 1920 where 238 B6sbs were built. These locomotives were retrofitted with power reversers to make the frequent switching moves quicker and easier for crews that operated them.
These switchers could be found in major freight yards, passenger yards, and could occasionally be found on branch line duty. With over 36,000 lbs of Tractive Effort these 0-6-0s did their job effectively. Through World War 1 and World War 2, they could be seen pretty much everywhere on the PRR. They were eventually pulled during the late 1940s and early 1950s in favor of diesel switchers that were becoming more common place on the railroads.
Today 1 B6sb survived and can be seen in the Railroad Museum Of Pennsylvania located in Strasburg, Pa.
