These huge engines were named the Challenger Simple Articulated, or CSA-1, class. The railroad received 25 near copies, classified as CSA-2, the following year.

Unlike compound Mallet engines that crawled along with drag freights, the Challengers had two sets of high- pressure cylinders and could safely reach passenger train speeds. The mammoth locomotives also had a heavy-duty starting tractive effort of 97,400 pounds.

Originally constructed to haul fast freight up the famous Wasatch grade, the CSA-1 and -2 Challengers would hold a variety of assignments over their long careers- including passenger service. Painted in gunmetal gray with striking aluminum trim, the locomotive was christened “Commodore Vanderbilt” in honor of the famed American businessman who once owned the New York Central Railroad.

Developed by engineers at the Case School of Applied Science, the streamlined shroud completely covered both the locomotive and tender. The design was not purely aesthetic—it was carefully engineered and highly functional. Hinged panels allowed access to key maintenance points, while a grilled recess atop the cowling helped promote proper smoke updraft. Streamlining provided two primary benefits: improved airflow and increased insulation. Engineers estimated approximately a 2% improvement in airflow, and the shroud helped reduce heat loss. However, the added weight and increased maintenance requirements ultimately outweighed these advantages.

Production Run Details

For this exciting production run, we are bringing back the Commodore Vanderbilt Hudson in several striking fantasy paint schemes, including Rexall, Century Green, Pacemaker Red, and Lightning Stripe.

In addition, we are proud to introduce two USAAF-inspired Warbird paint schemes that bring a bold and striking new look to this legendary locomotive. The need for more powerful locomotives became increasingly urgent, but wartime restrictions limited the railroad’s ability to acquire new engines. As a result, the Reading turned to its own roster for a solution.

The rugged I10-sa Class 2-8-0 Consolidation proved to be an ideal candidate for conversion. They operated across much of the Reading system and also participated in pool service with the Western Maryland Railway. The first 20 locomotives were configured for freight service, while the final 10 were equipped for passenger service, though they continued to spend most of their careers hauling freight.

Despite their impressive performance, the T-1s had relatively short service lives. By 1954, all 30 locomotives had been placed into storage, with a few briefly returning to service in 1955 to handle a temporary surge in traffic. Most were eventually sold, retired, and scrapped by 1958. Fortunately, the Reading Railroad preserved four of these powerful locomotives for excursion service, operating them in the famous Iron Horse Rambles.

Production Run Highlights

For this production run, we are excited to bring back several fan-favorite versions of the legendary Reading T-1, celebrating both preservation and modern-day excursion railroading.

What was new about it was the transmission, developed in-house by Fendt, which, instead of the previous four forward and one reverse gear, could optionally be equipped with eight forward and two reverse gears.
